【English version】”Students Performing Their Best Despite Coronavirus”

The second semester of the second year of Reiwa has come to an end. It has been a difficult time, but our concerns about the students during this time have eased as we have observed their approach the term and its activities and events. The energy of young people is so admirable. Let me briefly cover what took place in the second semester, something I also did in my address as part of the closing ceremony on December 22.

One group of students, comprised mainly of executive members from the student council, successfully planned and carried out, for the first time, a remote “Wakaba Festival”. Another group prepared diligently and were able to display their wonderful English skills in the Kusunoki Trophy English Recitation and Speech Contest. Yet another group conducted themselves impeccably in helping with the orientations for entrance exams, as well as several open schools.

In addition, a Shoin junior high school student received the President’s Award from the National Tax Savings Association, sponsored by the National Tax Agency, for the best composition on taxes. This contest received more than 160,000 submissions from all over the country. One member of the school discipline committee discipline also won the Excellence Award at the “Appropriate Internet Usage Measures Practical Case Presentation Contest” in Osaka Prefecture, while students on the ever-growing Community Support Association (CSA) volunteer circle were featured in the media for their contribution to the Uganda project and other various activities.

In addition, seven high school students surprised the audience by making guest appearances in this year’s “Hakama Contest” (a hakama is a kind of a Japanese garment used for formal wear), which is a festival project organized by Osaka Shoin Women’s University. The school students who participated in this contest already play an active role in the respective fields of social dance, pole dance, baton twirling, mogul skiing, classical ballet, and snowboarding.

Despite the restrictions on club activities that have been in place, Shoin students strived towards achieving their goals and achieved so much. I would like to write about the ones that won tiles at the national competition level. The high school dance club has always been among the top ranks in national competitions, but this year they won the championship for the first time. There were also 8 consecutive victories for the junior high school baton twirling club, 11 consecutive victories for the junior high school pompom cheer club, 4 consecutive victories for the high school baton twirling club, and 9 consecutive victories for the high school pompom club up until last year when they finished in second place. This year they won back the championship title. In addition to this, there were also individual winners. Finally, the junior high school basketball club won first place in the Osaka regional tournament and will go on to participate in the national tournament.

As you can see, Shoin’s students have devoted themselves to pursuing their goals even than we thought. Moreover, they seemed to have been able to navigate the dangers and difficulties presented by the current situation caused by coronavirus. These young people’s unwavering efforts have never been in question even in this extremely difficult situation. Now I feel deeply relieved that all of our students are growing and developing steadily with the energy and strength to overcome whatever is in front of them.
