【English version】”Complete Domination”

This December, the junior high and high school baton twirling and pompom cheer clubs had one purpose. Due to COVID19, the two major national competitions were held in December with the “49th Baton Twirling National Tournament ” held on December 11th and the “JAPAN CUP 2021” taking place from December 16th to 19th. At those two major national tournaments, Shoin’s junior and senior high school students did something truly remarkable.

First, the “49th Baton Twirling National Tournament” was held at Makuhari Messe Event Hall in Chiba Prefecture, and the teams that won the regional qualifying rounds throughout the country then went on to compete for the national championship. The Shoin junior and senior high school clubs did this by winning the grand prix gold medals at the Kansai tournament on November 3rd.

Each of the clubs achieved first place, that is, victory for the Shoin clubs was complete. Shoin placed first in the junior high school baton and junior high school pompom cheer competitions, first in the high school baton grand prix, and received the president’s award for the high school pompom cheer competition. This was the 49th time this competition had been held, but it was the first time in its history that it had been completely dominated by one school.

Next was the “JAPAN CUP 2021”. This tournament was held over four days in conjunction with the National Marching Band Tournament at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza in Chofu City, Tokyo. Shoin’s baton twirling club and pompom cheer club, which both qualified locally in the top places to participate in the national tournament, achieved complete domination at the “JAPAN CUP 2021”.

With this victory, the high school baton twirling club has won this competition 5 out of 25 times (including 5 consecutive victories), and the high school pompom cheer team has won 12 out of 25 times (including 9 consecutive victories). As for the junior high school clubs, the baton twirling club has won 9 out of 12 times (including 9 consecutive victories) they have competed in this competition, while the pompom cheer club has won 12 out of the past 18 times (including 12 consecutive victories). This is the fourth time that Shoin has placed first in all events in this tournament.

Although each club is now literally the best in Japan, it is not guaranteed that this same level of performance will continue. I have been observing these clubs for the nine years since I became the principal, and even from my amateur point of view, I can see how they have evolved year by year. I feel that the performances over the last few years have something to appeal to in terms of art. In fact, they are a work of art and are the result of serious daily practice. I’m really looking forward to seeing these clubs evolve further in the future.
