人生は人との出会いの連続です。第一印象は、相手に与える最初のイメージであり、その後の関係に大きな影響を与えます。どうすれば相手に良い印象を与えることができるでしょうか。どのようなところに気を付ければよいのでしょうか。あなたは知っていますか。

ここで、メラビアンの法則を紹介いたします。メラビアンの法則とは、アメリカの心理学者アルバート・メラビアンが実験結果をもとに提唱したもので、人が他人に対して抱く印象のうち、視覚情報が55%、聴覚情報が38%、言語情報が7%を占めるというものです。つまり、実際に話す言葉より、見た目や声のトーン、話し方のほうが第一印象に大きく影響するとしています。

まず、視覚情報が第一印象の半分以上を占めるので、初めての人と会うときは清潔感のある身だしなみが大切です。特に、学校の制服を着崩したり、私服でもだらしなく見えるものはあまりよくありません。髪や爪、靴なども忘れずにチェックしてください。

また、表情や仕草も重要です。笑顔は相手に親しみやすさを伝えます。笑顔は相手に安心感を与え、良い印象を持ってもらいやすくなります。

さらに、姿勢も大切です。相手のほうをしっかりと向き、背筋を伸ばし、胸を張った姿勢を保つことで、自信を持っている印象を与えます。猫背にならないように気をつけ、立っている時も座っている時も姿勢を意識しましょう。

次に、聴覚情報も第一印象の４割近くを占めるとされています。明るく落ち着いた声のトーン、はっきりとした発話で話すことが大切です。小さな声で口をしっかりと動かさずに話すと、暗く、弱い印象を与えてしまいます。相手の話をしっかり聞き、適切なタイミングで返事をすることで、誠実さを伝えることができます。

また、相手の目を見て話すことで、誠実さや関心を示すことができます。アイコンタクトは、相手に対する敬意を表す大切な要素です。

最後に、言語情報は第一印象においては少ない割合とされていますが、ぶっきらぼうな話し方や乱暴な言葉遣いはよくありません。丁寧な言葉遣いや態度で相手に対する敬意を示してください。また、どのような話題をどのようなボキャブラリーでどんな風に話すかは、あなたの知性と教養を表すこととなります。

いよいよ年末も近づいてきました。新しい年に向かって受験も終盤を迎えていますが、大学入試等の面接や最近増えてきた総合型選抜におけるプレゼンテーション、また、中学受験、高校受験の面接などにおいても、この法則を知っていることは大きく役に立つことと思います。作文や小論文、志望動機について先生に見てもらっている人は多いですが、相手に伝える内容だけでなく、伝えるときの表情や姿勢、身だしなみなどに気を付け、また、声のトーンやはっきりとした発音などを練習することで、あなたの印象は大きくアップすることになります。あなたの第一印象をアップして、進路希望を実現しましょう。

“Make a Great First Impression and Ace Your Interview!”

It can be said that life is a long series of encounters with people. The first impression you make is the one that others will remember, and it has a great impact on the relationship you will have with others from that point. So, how can you make a first good impression? What do you need to pay attention to? How much do you know about making great first impressions?

To begin with, I would like to introduce Mehrabian’s Law. Based on experiment results conducted by American psychologist Albert Mehrabian, Mehrabian’s Law states that visual information accounts for 55% of the impression people have of others, auditory information for 38% of that impression, while verbal information makes up 7%. In other words, appearance, tone of voice, and manner of speaking have a greater impact on first impressions than the actual words spoken.

We can see from the results above that visual information accounts for more than half of first impressions, so clearly it is very important to present yourself appropriately when meeting someone for the first time. In particular, your school uniform should be clean and neat, and the same is true if you are wearing regular formal or casual clothes. In addition, make sure that you are well groomed and don’t forget to check your hair, nails, shoes, etc.

Facial expressions and gestures are also important as a smile conveys friendliness. Smiling can put others at ease, and it makes it easier for them to generate a good impression of you. Second, posture is also important. Facing the other person directly and keeping a straight back give the impression of confidence. Be careful not to slouch and be aware of your posture whether you are standing or sitting.

Next, auditory information is said to account for nearly 40% of a first impression. It is important to speak with a bright but calm tone of voice and to speak clearly. If you speak in a quiet voice and without expression, you will give a dark and weak impression. Also, listening carefully to what the other person is saying and responding at the appropriate time will convey sincerity. Looking the other person in the eyes while speaking has the same effect and lets them know you are interested. Eye contact is an a very important element when it comes to showing respect for the other person.

Finally, although verbal information and cues make up only a small percentage of a first impression, blunt or aggressive speech is not appropriate. You need to ensure that you show respect for the other person by using polite language and with a calm demeanor. What topics you talk about and how you talk about them, and with what vocabulary, will also highlight your intelligence and educational background.
