こういった力の中で、特に「GRID(Grit: 根気・粘り強さ、Resilience: 回復力、Initiative: 自発性、Direction: 方向性)」という概念が注目されています。

Resilience(回復力)― 失敗から学ぶ安心の環境

Initiative(自発性)― 一歩踏み出す勇気を応援

Direction(方向性)― 自分らしい未来を描く

Nurturing the power to develop one’s future – Girl’s education at Shoin and GRID.

Along with globalization and the spread of AI in recent years, changes in our society are being felt at an increasing rate. To adapt to these changing times, we don’t only require knowledge, but also the ability to think for ourselves; the ability to work with other people; and the power to control our emotions while having consideration for others. Since these abilities cannot be digitized or visualized, they are known as non-cognitive abilities.

The ministry of education says in order to nurture these abilities, initiative and conversation-based learning is vital. During these hours of research-based study, students can independently identify an issue, gather information on the subject, and prepare a presentation to communicate their findings. This process not only builds powers of thinking and expression, but also the qualities important in life, such as co-operation and determination.

Among these abilities, the traits of grit, resilience, initiative and direction (GRID) are especially receiving attention as the qualities necessary for young people today to adapt to this rapidly changing society.

So how can the qualities of GRID be nurtured? Shoin junior high and high schools achieve this by being girls-only schools.

Grit can be achieved by the accumulation of small successes. At Shoin, we respect each students’ desire to “give it a try,” and through their club activities, extracurricular activities and research-based classes, students can experience the process of try fail try again succeed. These are the grounds on which true grit can be nurtured.

Resilience comes from learning from one’s mistakes in a comfortable environment. Girls at Shoin can work together and express themselves in a warm and welcoming environment. Even if they make mistakes, they are supported by their classmates and teachers which encourages them to keep trying. Through these experiences, they gain the valuable ability of being able to start again.

Initiative comes from having the support to take the first step. At Shoin, students aren’t forced to do something; they are taught the importance of choosing for oneself. Through their presentations, global education, school and course events along with their club activities, there is an abundance of opportunities to act with initiative. The delicate perception and empathy that only women can demonstrate becomes the basis of self-motivation.

Direction comes from picturing a future where one can be oneself. In Shoin’s career education, students are given the chance to consider what they like and what they want to do. While thinking about university and society, students learn how to steer their lives based on their own sense of values, giving them the power to choose their futures using their own focal point. This is direction.

Girls’ education at Shoin is not merely the acquisition of knowledge, it is the nurturing of a strong mind that can go out into the world and prosper. The ethos of “thinking ability,” “emotional heart” and, “will to act” that Shoin is based on provides the grounds on which the four qualities of GRID can be nurtured. Us teachers strive to ensure that all students have the ability to shape their own lives and we continue to work diligently with each and every student to broaden their potential.
